Last month Calderdale College organised a Women in Engineering Day at West Yorkshire Manufacturing Services for budding future female engineers.
The 1-day event provided 80 students with industry insights and a chance to hear directly from inspirational women, who are experts in the sector.
This event is the first of many exciting plans that are in development to help support students, employers and local businesses in Yorkshire.
The panel consisted of Helen Thornber (Managing Director, Hargreaves Foundry), Sophia Gollop (Operations Director, Factorylux), Amanda McLaren (Managing Director, AW Hainsworth), Olivia Hullah (Trust Electrical), Janine Downs (3M Buckley Innovation Centre) and Hannah French, (Engineering Apprentice, TEC)

The Real Working Experience
After an insight into the industry and the importance of women working within the engineering sector, students were given a tour of Calderdale College’s top of the range engineering facilities, named The Engineering Centre.
The industry-standard centre is a perfect replica of the facilities students would see in an everyday workplace.
The facility includes a garage workshop with the latest diagnostic equipment, custom-built welding and fabrication area, an electrical workshop, an open space dedicated to milling and turning and a hand fitting area for foundation and engineering techniques.
Calderdale College is on a mission to play its part in helping to provide the necessary skills to young women who want to enter the engineering sector.
Currently, there is a shortage of engineers in the local and surrounding communities, and by offering high-quality employer-led courses and apprenticeships, these skills gaps can be filled.
